Two days at the Wired Conference 2011

Geekings. A couple of weeks ago, ECD Andy Fowler and Digi Director Kevin Brown went to the Wired Conference 2011. It was a mix of mental technology from the future and a realistic eye on some of the more obvious concerns for agencies and brands – such as all things social. There was a wealth of quality speakers and frisson. A particular highlight being when Andrew Keen verbally demolished a trio of social advocates with his punchy address on ‘digital narcissism’. Strong stuff. You can watch a few of the speakers on the website below. Essential viewing.

New Sisters

Greetings blog readers, please join us in welcoming our new creative duo Liz and Lisa.

3 interesting facts about Lisa

  1. She has, through pure coincidence, bumped into Cilla Black 8 times. They have shared three flights, passed each other on the street twice and sat in the same restaurant on three occasions.
  2. Her first concert was New Kids on the Block in 1990, where she jumped up and down on her chair so much that she fell forward and ended up knocking out her two front teeth.
  3. She loves her new I-phone 4S and loves to show off about it.

And 3 interesting facts about Liz

  1. She has the ability to turn her feet round to face the other way. A full 180 degrees.
  2. Another feet related fact. She can’t stand male feet and finds them quite repugnant. A good job she’s joined us in the winter then.
  3. She shares her birthday with Judy Blume.

Lisa knocking one back.

Something Lost, Something Found

Resident Jedi Phil Teer has been to two very interesting events that are on show within a few hundred yards of each other on the Southbank, one seems to represent the dying of one craft whilst the other represents the birth of another.

Power to the Pixel is a 4-day, cross-media forum of content creators in the film and media industry working in digital technology staged at the BFI.  “Film” is an installation in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern by artist Tacita Dean.

While Power to the Pixel celebrates the emergent sector of transmedia storytelling, Dean laments the imminent death of 16mm film production.  As analogue retires in one building, digital takes over next door.

Or does it? Read more over on Phil’s blog.

Top 5…

Here are Laura’s top 5 quirks about Brazil, some of which may surprise you.

Beer here, Beer there

Brazilians love beer as much as the British & Germans, perhaps even more so.  Where ever you care to loiter you will always be in ear shot of a friendly beer seller waiting to sell you an iced can for 80p.   Even when stuck in a traffic jam.

Haviana’s

Yes everyone in Brazil wears them too.

Shop Guards

Ever been to a UK airport when the terrorism threat was at ‘severe’ and seen the police guards armed with mean looking machine guns?  Well imagine that sight outside of every well-to-do shop and bank in rural Brazil and you get an idea of the amount of effort that goes into private security there.

Protection Money

Whenever you park in a public area, the likelihood is you will need to pay money or cigarettes to an unofficial looking guy to ‘look after’ your car whilst you are away (they must do a good job as the car was always safe and untouched on our return).

Everyone Delivers

Forget ordering online, you can go shopping locally, pick what you want and request that the shop deliver it to you at home later – for free.   Or just call them, the local pharmacy were quite happy to deliver a toothbrush to us at 11pm.

Musee Urbain

Musee Urbain (everything sounds so cool in French) is a great project we’ve just completed for our friends over at the McCord Musuem in Montreal. In essence, it’s a Canadian version of Streetmuseum. Because of our experience making the original version and Londinium it was a super smooth process aided by the fact that the McCord Museum are a lovely bunch of people to work with. It’s also bilingual. Mais oui! So if you’re heading over to Montreal anytime soon  download the app and go and explore.

A good night out

Wednesday night some of our girls got to go and see Rihanna romp around the stage at the O2 with a couple of our friends at Sky. The lucky lot were not only dazzled by Ri-Ri’s tight leather and beaded bikinis but were also wined and dined in the comfort of the Sky Box. Dom even saw princess Beatrice in the loos too. A top night all round.

Hollywood Horror

Not long now until our super glamorous Halloween party. So save the date, dust off your best fancy dress outfit and bring your friends. There will be some hot-as-hell DJ action, a bit of burlesque from the devilishly delightful Agent Lynch as well as a ghoulishly good make-up artist. We will also be hosting a raffle and all the profits from the night will go to support the Mali Development fund.

So come, one come all.
